Why Your Website Traffic Is Dropping in 2026 (And What Actually Still Works)

Nearly two-thirds of Google searches now end without a single click. Here's what's really happening to your traffic — and the three things that still bring customers in.

If you've looked at your analytics this year and thought "did I break something?" — you probably didn't. Something changed in how search works, and almost every small business site is feeling it at the same time.

What actually happened

Google no longer just hands you a list of links. It writes the answer at the top of the page. Those AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all searches, and they've spread fast — up by more than half in a single year.

The effect on clicks is blunt. Studies through 2026 consistently find that when an AI Overview appears, click-through rate to the results below it falls by somewhere between 35% and 60%. Across all of Google, close to two-thirds of searches now end with no click at all — the person got their answer and left.

Small businesses feel this harder than anyone. Large publishers lost roughly a fifth of their search referrals. Small sites lost closer to 60%, because they depend on search almost entirely and have no app, no newsletter, no brand traffic to cushion the fall.

So no — your traffic chart isn't a punishment. It's the new baseline.

The part nobody tells you: your remaining traffic is better

Here's the number that changes how you should think about this. The visitors who do still click through convert measurably better — studies put it around 23% higher than before.

That makes sense. The casual "just checking a fact" visitor never arrives anymore; the AI answered them. The person who clicks now has read a summary, decided you're worth a look, and arrived with intent.

Which means the old scoreboard is broken. Sessions is no longer the metric that matters. Enquiries is. A site getting 300 visits and 12 enquiries is beating a site getting 1,000 visits and 4.

Being inside the answer is the new front page

The other half of the data is where the opportunity sits. Businesses that get cited inside an AI Overview don't just survive — they do better than they did before it existed. Cited brands earn on the order of twice the organic clicks per impression of uncited ones on the same search, and see a solid lift in click-through rate on top.

So the game moved. It's no longer "rank first in the list." It's "be the business the AI names when it writes the answer." That's GEO — generative engine optimization, and it's still early enough that most of your competitors haven't touched it.

Three things that still work

1. Be quotable. AI lifts clean, factual sentences. "We're passionate about delivering excellence" gets ignored. "We're a family plumbing firm in Tampere, on call 24/7, with a €95 callout fee" gets quoted. Put the plain facts — what you do, where, for whom, roughly what it costs — in plain text on your site.

2. Be machine-readable. Structured data tells AI systems exactly what your business is, what you offer, your hours, your location and your reviews, in a format they parse perfectly. It's invisible to visitors and decisive for machines. (Every site we build ships with it.)

3. Convert the visitors you do get. This is the one most businesses skip, and it's the one with the fastest payback. If fewer people arrive but each is more serious, then a slow, cluttered, hard-to-contact site costs far more than it did two years ago. Fast loading, one obvious next step, a phone number that's tappable on mobile, a contact form that takes ten seconds. That's it.

The honest summary

You can't get 2023's traffic back — nobody can, and anyone selling you that is selling you something. What you can do is make sure that when AI writes an answer about businesses like yours, yours is one of the names in it, and that the people who click actually turn into customers.
